To capture a Bloody Crocodile ! Yes, I want to capture one of the icons of Australia in a picture using my drone. I've been flying drones for nearly 2 years now and I'm yet to find one of these magnificent creators in the wild. Red Dust below a blue sky is all I can see as I follow behind a Boat out to Corroboree, not a corroboree I mean Corroboree Billabong, and the boat it is being towed behind a fully equipped 4wd including recovery gear, jerry cans and of course fishing rods. It's been nearly 2 years since I had flown my first real Drone, I had grown up in Kakadu and been surrounded by Crocodiles, after a while you got used to seeing some bigger than the boat you were in and respect was what i had for them as i was technically in their backyard. Since moving away from Kakadu I may have been lucky to see a Crocodile maybe once every five years compared to maybe once a month, so I was determined to capture a Croc Photo with my drone. Arriving at the boat ramp and releasing it was clearly a good time to be fishing, the waters were filled with fishing boats and the car park full of cars. I needed to find somewhere where there was no one around. What was I driving though? My little red Hyundai i30 rocket , not 4wd and not equipped, could help me get out of trouble if I got stuck or lost. After driving around for about 15 minutes I found a track that didn't look too risky and drove down to find an empty grassy location under a tree. I set up my Drone, checked my surroundings and set off like a national geographic helicopter loaded with a film crew looking for something to film. I aimed to fly in the opposite direction to where all the fishing boats were so I could maybe find a secret spot with no boats around hoping this would increase my chances of getting my Croc Shot. I flew over green grass, trees, burnt out spear grass and then started to see a small amount of brown billabong water that turned into a small but remote river, small enough that boats wouldn't be able to get to, i slowly hovered over the water looking straight down and began to make move along the little river to see what i could find, lily pad, lily pads and more lily pads, well they are beautiful looking on top of the brown water, maybe ill have get a good picture of them and call it a day, I decided to fly on for another 100 m and see what else i could find, at this stage my Drone was roughly 700m away from me and directly over water, 750 meters, 770 meters 790 meters just lily pads. Bugger. Ok so today's picture might just be of billabong lily pads, nothing wrong with that, Right? I got to about 850 meters away and started looking for a good shot of lilies to get a bird eye view of. Wait a minute wait is that? Is that a log or my long lost crocodile? It is ! Just chilling by a lily pad, in my head I was talking to the awesome looking Creature saying “I’m sorry to bother you but if I can just have 1 minute of your time to take your picture I will be extremely Grateful”. I rotate the Drone and position the Croc in the middle of the screen, as right now it's the star, i move the drone down a few meters and, bloop The croc Disappears under the water, Oh shoot i scared it, when i scared it i really dont think my Drone would have any chance against this 3 meter Predator. I’ll wait it out, well as long as i can until i have no battery life left, and then it resurfaces, its now glistening in the sun from the water on its back, “Oh Wow that looks Great'' I think as i make sure my setting are right and the Croc is framed right, click, click, click goes the shutter as the crocodile is thinking to itself well if your going to take my picture i want to be looking the best i can. And Yikes, did it look Great, What do you think ?
